EPIC LAMB

So two weeks ago I wrote about all things Epic when I reviewed the current Protein Bars being offered from the amazing people at Epic foods. In those writings I pleaded, a few times, to be allowed to be a taste tester for their upcoming Lamb bar they had announced a while ago. Sadly my pleas went unanswered.

However that’s quite alright for two very important reasons. One, the bars were released as a New Years Present on the Epic Website and I bought them as soon as I could. The Second reason is that they didn’t need another taste tester because these bars are perfect. So perfect in fact that they are the new Gold standard of everything Epic.

Sorry Turkey, everyone needs to move down one. No bronze for you. Beef, you now are the Bronze standard and Bison, I can’t believe I am saying this but you are now Silver.

As I said Lamb is perfect. Seriously nothing can be done to make it better. As I mentioned in the previous post Bison  won because of texture. Lamb wins because of an even better texture than the Bison plus amazingly subtle spices that bring out the flavor of the lamb so well you would swear you are not eating a protein bar at all.

Epic knew exactly what they were doing with the spices in this bar adding in Basil, Marjoram, Oregano, Rosemary, Red and Black pepper that don’t overwhelm the Lamb at all but enhance it. I was a little concerned about the mint and lemon peel as well as the currants before tasting the bars thinking they might have been too much but I shouldn’t have. They added both a refreshing and sweet addition to the lamb.

Epic Lamb has 10 grams of protein and 140 calories giving it the distinction of having the lowest numbers of both. Regardless of numbers this is the best protein bar I have ever had. I feel like I’m having a prepared meal and not something off the shelf.

As of right now you can only get the Epic Lamb bars on the Epic website and there really is no information about them on the site at the moment.

All you need to do though to get them is head to the shop and you will find the ability to buy a box of 12 (which is what I did and it was worth every penny) or a sample pack. The Sample Pack now includes the Lamb plus the other amazing bars in the collection. I would go this route if you haven’t had any yet. Shame on you.

Clicking HERE will take you to the shop  if you want to do it right now which I highly recommend.

So that’s now officially all things Epic ranked and filed until Epic decides to release something else amazing. I don’t know how they will top Lamb but I also thought Bison was the be all end all and they proved me wrong. With another SIX new products coming out this quarter alone (not sure if all of them are new bars but one can wish) hopefully I’ll have a chance to taste test some of those before they hit the market.

As always thanks for reading, sharing and commenting.

EPIC BISON

Merry Christmas everyone. I said I was going to stick to a schedule and wanted to make sure I stayed truthful.

So Bison takes the Gold. for  a recap Silver went to Beef and Bronze went to Turkey.  I wonder what Bisons anthem would be? “Oh Bison, you are so tasty. With loads of Grass Fed awesomeness and cranberries!” I have no idea why it’s in the key of the Canadian National Anthem but I digress.

The reasons why I love the bison over the Beef and the Turkey really has to do with texture. The flavors of all the bars are rock solid and taste was not enough to distinguish the bars. The bisons texture is just the most pleasant of the three and I think it has to do a lot with the delicious uncured bacon they add into the bar. The fat from the bacon adds a nice amount of unctuousness that I think the bison, due to it’s low fat content, would miss without it.

Epic Bison has the lowest amount of protein out of the three bars clocking in at 11 grams. Along with the lowest amount of protein it brings in the highest amount of calories at 200 grams. For comparison Beef has 190 and Turkey has 150. Calories should not be your concern when eating these bars though if you are going primal. We will get to that in future posts.

You also get a bar with tons of Omega-3’s, Iron, CLA, Vitamin B12, Bacon (yes that is a good thing, always), Niacin, is ketogenic, low glycemic and as always gluten free.

So that’ it. My reviews of all things Epic. Until I get the Epic Lamb. One last pitch for taste tester. All are great and I would recommend getting a sample pack and trying all three. You know which one is my favorite so now go find out which one is yours.

As always thanks for reading and please comment and share.

EPIC BEEF

Beef it’s what’s for, well, anytime. Epic Beef is my second favorite of the three amazing meat snacks that Epic currently offers. (Still putting my services out there to taste test lamb. Contact me. Please.)

Now the Habanero Beef bar is excellent. It’s just not Bison Bacon which is why it got Silver instead of Gold. You can also read my previous write up of The Turkey Bar here. I really like the heat from the Habanero that complements the savory beef and sweet cherry combination. I am a Chili head though. For some it might be a little too spicy. Personally I think it is perfect and hope Epic never tones it down.

The beef bar clocks in at 13 Grams of protein making it the second highest amount after Epic Turkey. It also has a low glycemic index and is chock full of Omega-3, CLA, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, Antioxidants (thanks to the cherries) and Niacin. Of course it is gluten free and no extra sugar has been added.

Cow is one of my favorite types of meat to consume. Most people are going to tell you that it isn’t healthy for you and too much red meat can kill you. Well that’s because people usually are consuming beef that is not eating what it is designed to eat. GRASS! Epic Beef is 100 percent grass fed and finished making it the perfect beef based snack you can buy.  Unlike that bagged beef jerky at the gas station.

Please stop buying gas station jerky. It’s expensive and full of stuff that you don’t need. Why is there so much wheat in gas station jerky? With Epic beef bars meat is what you want and meat is what you get along with calorie burning peppers and antioxidant rich Cherries. It’s perfectly amazing.

Bison will be finishing up the list for the third and final installment (till lamb shows up). Thanks for reading and sharing.

EPIC TURKEY

So I stated in the previous blog post (a long, LONG time ago) that I found the perfect primal energy source for anytime of the day. They are called EPIC Bars and they are just that, EPIC.

The first one I am reviewing is EPIC Turkey. There is a lot going for EPIC Turkey including the fact that it has the least amount of calories and fat with the most amount of Protein among the three bars. Plus it has tons of iron, potassium and folic acid while having no added sugars and being all natural. It would be the perfect bar, if not for the other two bars EPIC offers.

I like the Turkey a lot and if all I was looking at was protein and calories this would be my top pick of the three. However the taste and texture are just not as good as the other two bars that are offered. There is a slight tang and grittiness to these bars that I just can’t get over. Not enough to not eat a whole box of them but enough to drop them to Third place in the EPIC Bar Race.

For that reason alone it comes in third. I recommend it wholeheartedly and would stock up on them anytime. However if you are like me and are on a fixed budget then these wouldn’t be my first pick since the others have beef and Bison in the mix.

Next up, pick number two. Beef or Bison?

Epic Bars

Epic Bars

When I first decided to try to get into Primal I looked for products that would make it easier for me to stay primal when I don’t have the option to prepare and eat my own meals. There are not a lot of options out there but thankfully I found one that hits all the check marks for me.

  1. Tastes Great
  2. Completely Primal (No GMO’s, No Gluten, 100% Grass-Fed)
  3. Not very Expensive

Epic Bars fit this criteria completely with three different flavors from Beef Habanero, Turkey Almond Cranberry and Bison Bacon. They all are amazing and all deserve a write up of there own. So that’s what I am doing. First up will be Turkey. So stop by tomorrow to get my take on the first of three great additions to the Primal Lifestyle and my lifesaver when I am not home.

Live Soda Kombucha Root Beer

We all know soda tastes amazing but is horrible for you. Regardless if it is diet. Maybe especially if it is diet. Some people are aware of Kombucha and how amazing it is for the human body. Those same people know that it tastes horrible. So what does an entrepreneur person do? They make kombucha soda which is exactly what the people at Live Soda out of Austin Texas did. 99 % organic kombucha sweetened with stevia and other natural flavors which makes an amazing tasting, USDA Organic, root beer at only 60 calories. Fills my soda desire and my bodies need for kombucha. Thanks @LIVE_Soda. When I’m in Austin I’m going to need to hunt you down and thank you in person. Head to http://www.livesodakombucha.com to find some awesome @LIVE_Soda near you. You will love it.

Primal at Chipotle

So Chipotle for lunch today. (We got a two for one coupon for running The Too Hot to Handle 5k/15k race yesterday.) I went with a steak salad and added black beans, tomato salsa, red tomatillo salsa and guacamole. Forewent the vinaigrette due to calories. Ate half since it was so filling. Pretty primal I think for eating out. Plus I have the rest for dinner and the whole bowl is only 560 calories. If you are planning on going to Chipotle I suggest going to http://goo.gl/nXwnH first and building your meal.
