UPDATE : Really Going Primal

If you’ve recently visited the site you would have noticed that I had stopped posting months and months ago. I fell off the wagon. I started not caring anymore about how I looked and got into a funk. There were reasons for it but none that I will share here. I had really nothing to post, no updates that were worthwhile to write about so I just stopped.

A few weeks ago I realized I was unhappy with myself, for many reasons, and I needed to start caring again about my health, my looks, my mind and my spirit. So I am back with a new purpose and an internal desire to succeed. My goal is to run a Tough Mudder next summer and I will RUN it.

Primal is no longer my focus in the idea of consuming a specific diet. Primal is now breaking myself down into the basic elements I need to have to succeed in my goals of being truly Happy and Healthy.

Looking good with my shirt off would also be great so lets add that.

I’m starting my 2.0 life so join me, keep me accountable and see if this overweight 32 year old can pull it all off.

So two weeks ago I wrote about all things Epic when I reviewed the current Protein Bars being offered from the amazing people at Epic foods. In those writings I pleaded, a few times, to be allowed to be a taste tester for their upcoming Lamb bar they had announced a while ago. Sadly my pleas went unanswered.

However that’s quite alright for two very important reasons. One, the bars were released as a New Years Present on the Epic Website and I bought them as soon as I could. The Second reason is that they didn’t need another taste tester because these bars are perfect. So perfect in fact that they are the new Gold standard of everything Epic.

Sorry Turkey, everyone needs to move down one. No bronze for you. Beef, you now are the Bronze standard and Bison, I can’t believe I am saying this but you are now Silver.

As I said Lamb is perfect. Seriously nothing can be done to make it better. As I mentioned in the previous post Bison  won because of texture. Lamb wins because of an even better texture than the Bison plus amazingly subtle spices that bring out the flavor of the lamb so well you would swear you are not eating a protein bar at all.

Epic knew exactly what they were doing with the spices in this bar adding in Basil, Marjoram, Oregano, Rosemary, Red and Black pepper that don’t overwhelm the Lamb at all but enhance it. I was a little concerned about the mint and lemon peel as well as the currants before tasting the bars thinking they might have been too much but I shouldn’t have. They added both a refreshing and sweet addition to the lamb.

Epic Lamb has 10 grams of protein and 140 calories giving it the distinction of having the lowest numbers of both. Regardless of numbers this is the best protein bar I have ever had. I feel like I’m having a prepared meal and not something off the shelf.

As of right now you can only get the Epic Lamb bars on the Epic website and there really is no information about them on the site at the moment.

All you need to do though to get them is head to the shop and you will find the ability to buy a box of 12 (which is what I did and it was worth every penny) or a sample pack. The Sample Pack now includes the Lamb plus the other amazing bars in the collection. I would go this route if you haven’t had any yet. Shame on you.

Clicking HERE will take you to the shop  if you want to do it right now which I highly recommend.

So that’s now officially all things Epic ranked and filed until Epic decides to release something else amazing. I don’t know how they will top Lamb but I also thought Bison was the be all end all and they proved me wrong. With another SIX new products coming out this quarter alone (not sure if all of them are new bars but one can wish) hopefully I’ll have a chance to taste test some of those before they hit the market.

As always thanks for reading, sharing and commenting.

So about eight months ago a great Fitness and Nutrition store opened near me called FIT Lifestyle & Nutrition. It’s run by a great group of guys serving nutritious shakes and supplements. They also run a fitness class that uses TRX.

I had never heard of TRX before but it looked and sounded interesting and I needed a way to work out that would keep me coming back. Eating clean is a lot easier for me then finding the time and motivation to work out.

So what is TRX? Well it’s suspension training. That didn’t really help much did it? OK, well here is a video that might be better.

If you would like to know more or even purchase the products for yourself check out http://www.trxtraining.com/

I tried TRX a few times and really liked it but life got in the way and I just stopped.

Well today I woke up at 4:30 am for a 5:00 am class and it kicked my butt. My coach is awesome and so are the people who show up to workout. They keep me motivated and make sure I am keeping my form, well, most of the time. This will be my life Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the foreseeable future.

If you can find a TRX class I highly suggest trying it out. It’s fun, different and keeps things interesting so you don’t get bored.

Wednesday I will finish up everything EPIC with a review of the new EPIC lamb bar. After I TRX that is. As always thanks for reading, sharing and commenting.

Grass Fed Coffee Steak and Eggs with Two Sauces

Today’s home cooked meal is a breakfast to give you energy and the protein you need to go strong till lunch. I bought a 10 ounce grass fed top sirloin steak at Target and coated it in a ground coffee rub that I got the recipe for from my wife. if you would like it just ask. I seared the steak on all sides, about two minutes each,  in a cast iron pan with a little beef tallow on high. After the sear I threw it in the oven at 200 to finish cooking which I pulled when my meat thermometer reached 130.

While the steak was in the oven I cracked three organic free range eggs I got from Walmart, whisked them with some salt, pepper and garlic and got that all into an oven safe nonstick pan with a little bacon grease. I waited for the eggs to set and then flipped it for the other side to cook.

I had made an Ancho Tomatillo Sauce and a Chipotle Adobo Sauce for another recipe the previous week. I figured why not add them to the plate and they worked really well. I’ll post the recipes for the sauces if enough people ask for them. The Ancho is not hot at all and the Chipotle has a slight kick so they play off each other really well.

I cut the steak and egg up evenly for me and my wife and tried to make a nice presentation which you can see below.

So that’s it. Easy enough supercharged breakfast for two. I hope you liked this week of home cooked meals. Have a great weekend and as always thanks for reading, sharing and commenting.

Brisket with BBQ Sauce and Sauteed Asparagus

There isn’t a lot to say about this meal. I got a nicely priced Brisket, trimmed about 80 percent of the fat, rubbed it down with Black’s Dry rub and threw it into the oven at the lowest setting till it reached 165. I also sauteed some asparagus in bacon fat, plated both and put Stubb’s All Natural BBQ sauce on top. Simple meal and the Brisket will last a while and can be altered to make it not get boring over the course of the week it might take to finish. I Hope you all had a wonderful and safe New Years.

Paleo Meatloaf Muffins with Spaghetti Squash

So for this home cooked meal I decided to post one I found online. Google is a great friend to have when you have protein and produce and not a clue what to do with it. I had a lot of ground beef chilling in the fridge and figured meatloaf would be a great idea. So my search for Paleo Meatloaf turned up a lot of results but the one I found most interesting was for Meatloaf muffins.

I try to make meals that have easy leftovers since I’m a teacher and have a short time for lunch and sandwiches are no longer an option. The muffins seemed perfect. One muffin per meal would feed my wife and I for a week. So I tried them out and they were amazing. I knew they were going to be since the blog they came from was Nom Nom Paleo and she posted it from Quick and Easy Paleo Comfort Foods. Not a book I have yet but on my shortlist.

Paired them with spaghetti Squash which worked great. Word of advice for spaghetti squash. Don’t bother cutting it before you cook it. Totally unnecessary. It is so much easier to cut it after it cools and scoop it. Then reheat it in a pan on the stove top with a little of your favorite tomato sauce.

So that’s it. Simple, nutritious and can feed you and your spouse for a week. Or a few very hungry people for a night. Which ever works. Thanks Nom Nom and Quick and Easy for sharing this great recipe.

So the recipe is HERE if you didn’t click on the previous Nom Nom link. It’s that good I want to make sure you check it out.

Plate it anyway you like. I tried to go kind of fancy for the picture. Presentation is everything.

I’m Not a Chef

I’m a cook. I love to get into the kitchen and produce a meal for my family that they can enjoy and is good for them. If you want to be a part of the Primal/Paleo lifestyle you need to enjoy making meals at home.

I read tons of cookbooks and blogs both Primal Friendly and very Non Primal that have recipes I like to try out on a daily basis. Most of the time I stick to the directions but sometimes I’ll put my own spin on them. Most of the time it’s due to the fact that I am missing an ingredient and need to substitute.

So for my home cooked posts what you are going to see most of the time is a meal I cooked following a recipe I found on a blog or in a cookbook. I will post a pick and point you in the direction of where I found the recipe. I find it wrong to post someone else’s recipes on this site. If I changed something dramatically I will mention it if I feel it doesn’t give to much away if the recipe is from a cookbook.

So starting on Monday I will be posting some home cooked meals I found to be easy and delicious and Primal. Till then have a great weekend and thanks for reading.

Merry Christmas everyone. I said I was going to stick to a schedule and wanted to make sure I stayed truthful.

So Bison takes the Gold. for  a recap Silver went to Beef and Bronze went to Turkey.  I wonder what Bisons anthem would be? “Oh Bison, you are so tasty. With loads of Grass Fed awesomeness and cranberries!” I have no idea why it’s in the key of the Canadian National Anthem but I digress.

The reasons why I love the bison over the Beef and the Turkey really has to do with texture. The flavors of all the bars are rock solid and taste was not enough to distinguish the bars. The bisons texture is just the most pleasant of the three and I think it has to do a lot with the delicious uncured bacon they add into the bar. The fat from the bacon adds a nice amount of unctuousness that I think the bison, due to it’s low fat content, would miss without it.

Epic Bison has the lowest amount of protein out of the three bars clocking in at 11 grams. Along with the lowest amount of protein it brings in the highest amount of calories at 200 grams. For comparison Beef has 190 and Turkey has 150. Calories should not be your concern when eating these bars though if you are going primal. We will get to that in future posts.

You also get a bar with tons of Omega-3’s, Iron, CLA, Vitamin B12, Bacon (yes that is a good thing, always), Niacin, is ketogenic, low glycemic and as always gluten free.

So that’ it. My reviews of all things Epic. Until I get the Epic Lamb. One last pitch for taste tester. All are great and I would recommend getting a sample pack and trying all three. You know which one is my favorite so now go find out which one is yours.

As always thanks for reading and please comment and share.

Beef it’s what’s for, well, anytime. Epic Beef is my second favorite of the three amazing meat snacks that Epic currently offers. (Still putting my services out there to taste test lamb. Contact me. Please.)

Now the Habanero Beef bar is excellent. It’s just not Bison Bacon which is why it got Silver instead of Gold. You can also read my previous write up of The Turkey Bar here. I really like the heat from the Habanero that complements the savory beef and sweet cherry combination. I am a Chili head though. For some it might be a little too spicy. Personally I think it is perfect and hope Epic never tones it down.

The beef bar clocks in at 13 Grams of protein making it the second highest amount after Epic Turkey. It also has a low glycemic index and is chock full of Omega-3, CLA, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, Antioxidants (thanks to the cherries) and Niacin. Of course it is gluten free and no extra sugar has been added.

Cow is one of my favorite types of meat to consume. Most people are going to tell you that it isn’t healthy for you and too much red meat can kill you. Well that’s because people usually are consuming beef that is not eating what it is designed to eat. GRASS! Epic Beef is 100 percent grass fed and finished making it the perfect beef based snack you can buy.  Unlike that bagged beef jerky at the gas station.

Please stop buying gas station jerky. It’s expensive and full of stuff that you don’t need. Why is there so much wheat in gas station jerky? With Epic beef bars meat is what you want and meat is what you get along with calorie burning peppers and antioxidant rich Cherries. It’s perfectly amazing.

Bison will be finishing up the list for the third and final installment (till lamb shows up). Thanks for reading and sharing.

So I stated in the previous blog post (a long, LONG time ago) that I found the perfect primal energy source for anytime of the day. They are called EPIC Bars and they are just that, EPIC.

The first one I am reviewing is EPIC Turkey. There is a lot going for EPIC Turkey including the fact that it has the least amount of calories and fat with the most amount of Protein among the three bars. Plus it has tons of iron, potassium and folic acid while having no added sugars and being all natural. It would be the perfect bar, if not for the other two bars EPIC offers.

I like the Turkey a lot and if all I was looking at was protein and calories this would be my top pick of the three. However the taste and texture are just not as good as the other two bars that are offered. There is a slight tang and grittiness to these bars that I just can’t get over. Not enough to not eat a whole box of them but enough to drop them to Third place in the EPIC Bar Race.

For that reason alone it comes in third. I recommend it wholeheartedly and would stock up on them anytime. However if you are like me and are on a fixed budget then these wouldn’t be my first pick since the others have beef and Bison in the mix.

Next up, pick number two. Beef or Bison?
